Product Description

Patchouli Essential Oil comes from the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family. It carries a musky-sweet and slightly spicy fragrance. The plant grows mainly in Malaysia and India, where people traditionally call it “puchaput.”

The name patchouli comes from the Tamil words “pachchai ilai,” which mean “green leaf.” Producers collect the young leaves, dry and ferment them, and then extract the oil through steam distillation. As the oil matures, its scent becomes deeper and more powerful.

Traditional and Modern Uses of Patchouli Essential Oil

  • In many eastern countries, people placed dried patchouli leaves in potpourri and sachets. This practice freshened linen and clothing and also helped to keep insects away.
  • You can diffuse the oil in an aroma burner or diffuser to fill the room with a grounding, earthy scent.
  • Adding a few drops to bathwater creates a soothing and fragrant bathing experience.
  • When you dilute it with a carrier oil, you can massage it into the skin.
  • Many people enjoy using its rich fragrance in natural perfumes, incense, and candles.

Historical Background

Patchouli has played an important role in trade and culture for centuries. Merchants layered dried leaves between Indian cashmere shawls before shipping them to Victorian England. This method not only protected the fabric from moths but also added a scent that made the shawls highly desirable. Later, during the 1960s and 70s, Patchouli Essential Oil and incense became extremely popular in Europe and America. People valued its deep aroma, and as a result, it became a signature scent of that era. In addition, many Asian traditions have continued to value patchouli for its unique qualities.
